Carisoprodol belongs to the group of muscle relaxants. The mechanism of its action is due to the blocking of the nerve impulse (or pain), which is sent to the brain from the peripheral nervous system. Another name is SOMA or Vanadom. Initially, in 2007, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA, United States) approved the drug. Manufacturer – Meda Pharmaceuticals. Form release – tablets 250 and 350 mg for oral administration.

Pharmacokinetics

The muscle relaxant effect is observed after 30 minutes. And the maximum duration is 6 hours. The agent is metabolized by the liver through cytochrome P450 oxidase, excreted from the body through the kidneys. Its half-life reaches eight hours.

The main part of carisoprodol disintegrates into meprobamate, a well-known drug.

Indications for use

SOMA (Carisoprodol) is indicated for painful sensations in striated (skeletal) muscles.

It is used in complex treatment (in combination with rest and physiotherapeutic procedures) in the treatment of wounds and injuries of muscle tissue.

Mechanism of action

The drug suppresses the interneuronal impulse transmission in the reticular formation of the spinal cord. Used in combination with other drugs to treat the loss of flexibility of the pepper-striped muscles, and in order to eliminate the pain that occurs.

Contraindications

Carisoprodol is contraindicated:

Acute intermittent porphyria.

Diseases of the kidneys and liver. If you need to use Carisoprodol, it is recommended to consult a specialist, in this case, the doctor may prescribe a drug in a reduced dose and under supervision throughout the course of therapy.

Pregnancy and lactation. If there is an urgent need, you should consult a doctor, because the effect of the drug on the fetushas not been proven to be released into breast milk.

Method of use

Carisoprodolmust be taken in strict accordance with the prescription of the attending physician and with the attached instructions. Each intake of tablets with 200 ml of liquid.

The maximum daily dose is 1,400 mg. This corresponds to three to four times the reception (the last reception before bedtime) one tablet. The dose and regimen depends on the physical condition and pathology.
